The ancient world began to emerge in the Mesopotamia, Egypt and eastern Mediterranean during the third millennium B.C. and continued until Rome conquered these regions in the first century B.C. Many fundamentals of modern Western civilization—including architecture, art, philosophy, literature, science, and medicine—rely on the cultural achievements of the ancient civilizations. Today a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars study the ancient civilizations; the goal of this website is to present these scholars’ new discoveries and reinterpretations in a readable and concise format that will appeal to a broad audience. |
